CalFresh Admin Volunteer 2024

The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano is looking for administrative volunteers to support our CalFresh Outreach Team. CalFresh is a grocery assistance program (formerly Food Stamps) that offers low-income individuals and families a supplemental monthly benefit. The Food Bank’s CalFresh Team works in our community, conducting outreach with organizations throughout Contra Costa, Solano, and Napa Counties. CalFresh Admin Volunteers will support the CalFresh Team by following up by telephone with contacts who have been referred to our CalFresh Team. During the follow-up, CalFresh Admin Volunteers will utilize a scheduling assistant to help community members schedule an appointment with one of our CalFresh Coordinators. 

Current volunteers are encouraged to apply. We are looking for volunteers who can make a 2 to 3-hour commitment once or twice a week on an ongoing basis. Any individual interested in volunteering as a CalFresh Admin Volunteer must either be HIPAA certified or willing to take a 1.5 to 2-hour online certification class, and must be willing to complete a Civil Rights Training provided by the Food Bank.

Volunteer Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Making phone calls to assist community members with scheduling an appointment with a CalFresh Coordinator 
  • Data entry
  • Administrative projects

Volunteer Qualifications: 

  • Interest in the mission of the Food Bank
  • Willingness to complete HIPAA Certification and Civil Rights Training provided by the Food Bank. 
  • Basic administrative and customer service skills
  • Handwritten note-taking and data-entry skills are a plus
  • Strong verbal communication skills
  • Previous experience in customer service or a related field is preferred
  • Ability to sit at a desk for up to three hours if needed
  • Comfort interacting with community members from diverse backgrounds
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred, but not required
  • Ability to make at least a 1-year commitment
  • Adhere to Volunteer Waiver, Policies, Safety Rules, Agreements, and Code of Conduct
